LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 7, 2021) — If you ask Matthew Farmer what inspired him to pursue a degree in chemistry, his answer is simple:

Alum Michael Goodman graduated with a PhD in ��ɫ��Ƶ from Vanderbilt University in 2018. Prior, he graduated from the ��ɫ��Ƶ, College of Arts & Sciences with a ��ɫ��Ƶ BS in 2011 and completed a post-doc at University of California, Davis.

This interview is part of a series conducted by the department called, “UK ��ɫ��Ƶ Alumni: Where Are They Now?” This interview was coordinated by Dr. Arthur Cammers.

Alum Kayvon Ghayoumi, JD, graduated with a law degree from George Washington University Law School in 2020. Kayvon is from Louisville, KY. He graduated from the ��ɫ��Ƶ, College of Arts & Sciences with a ��ɫ��Ƶ BA and a minor in Biological Sciences in 2017.

It was 1949, World War II had ended and twice as many students were enrolled in universities across the country compared to pre-war enrollment, many were on the GI Bill. I was one of those June 1949 GI Bill seniors, graduating from UK with a BS degree in physical chemistry. My name is Alan Veith.

Dr. Russell J. Mumper has been named The University of Alabama’s vice president for research and economic development effective Jan. 1, 2019.

A vice provost from the University of Georgia who previously led four research centers or institutes co-founded five start-up companies, and received nearly $30 million in research grants and contracts, Mumper was selected following a national search.

Jonathan Barnes, PhD, was a student at UK from 2000 to 2006, earning both BS and MS degrees in ��ɫ��Ƶ.  Jonathan is now an Assistant Professor of ��ɫ��Ƶ at Washington University in St. Louis (). Here Jonathan answers some questions about his time at UK and offers some advice to current and future chemistry students.

This article is part of a series of articles on “UK ��ɫ��Ƶ Alumni: Where Are They Now?”  Here we feature former undergraduate Steven Chapman, class of 2016, who is now a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Steven's research at UW focuses on improving methodology in photocatalysis for asymmetric synthesis. Here Steven answers some questions about his current research, experiences at UK, and provides some advice for current undergraduates.

Could you tell us about your research project at the University of Wisconsin?

Darius Allen Shariaty, class of 2016, now works at Miltech UV International in Stevensville, MD. Allen's undergraduate research at UK focused on new binders for silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries.  In addition to a patent application, his work recently led to a publication in on which he is the first author. At Miltech, Allen works to develop polymer binders using UV curing methods.

Bryan Ingoglia is currently (May 2018) a graduate student in the Department of ��ɫ��Ƶ at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Brian grew up in Northern Kentucky, came to UK with the intention to obtain a degree in biology and attend medical school.  Like many undergraduate students, Brian’s interests changed as he took more advanced courses and became involved in undergraduate research. He decided to pursue graduate studies in chemistry and, near the completion of his graduate degree, he provided answers to a few questions.
